3 Dots & a Dash

3 Dots & a Dash

Three Dots and a Dash isn’t just a Tiki classic, it’s a cocktail with a coded message. Donn Beach created it during World War II, and the name comes from Morse code: three dots and a dash spell the letter “V.” At the time, that “V” meant victory for the Allies. So beneath all the rum, citrus, spice, and tropical theater is a tiny wartime toast hidden in plain sight.

  • 1 1/2 oz rhum agricole
  • 1/2 oz blended aged rum
  • 1/2 Spiced Honey
  • 1/2 oz Sunshine Sour
  • 1/2 oz Orange Blossom Tonic
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • Garnish: 3 maraschino cherries, 1 pineapple frond

Add the liquid ingredients to a shaker tin

Fill with 12 ounces of crushed ice and 4 to 6 small “agitator” cubes.

Flash-blend, then pour into a footed pilsner glass, straining out any large chunks of ice, and add the garnish.

Garnish with three cherries on a cocktail pick and a pineapple frond.
